Dr. Smith began in private practice at the Lincoln Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Clinic in Lincoln, Nebraska, specializing in spine surgery for four years before joining the Front Range Orthopedics & Spine. Dr. Smith has been in practice in Boulder County since 1994. He continues specializing in spine disorders and surgery including scoliosis. He performs disc arthroplasty procedures as a well as the XLIF procedure.   The producers of the XLIF procedure are honored to have Dr. Smith as one of their surgeons-teaching-surgeons how to perform the procedure. 

A native of Omaha, Nebraska, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Nebraska. He earned his medical degree at the University of Nebraska, where he also completed his orthopedic residency. Dr. Smith completed fellowship training in disorders of the spine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago and Elmwood Hospital in New Orleans. 

Dr. Smith's conservative and compassionate approach to spine patients has made him popular among his peers. He is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and has been published in national orthopedic journals.  He has served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Longmont United Hospital, Past Chief of Staff of Longmont United Hospital and Past President of the Colorado Orthopedic Society.

Dr. Smith is the rotating team physician for St. Vrain Valley School District high school athletics.
